Taking Steps to End Domestic Violence

Join the Independence House 5K Walk/Run

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

On October 1st, Independence House is hosting the annual 5K Walk/Run (with 1-mile option) to honor survivors of intimate partner violence and raise funds for Independence House. Registration begins at 9 a.m., rain or shine. The Walk/Run begins at 10 a.m., and the Open House will continue from 9 a.m. to noon with music, food, prizes and fun for all ages.

Independence House, Inc. is a Cape Cod-based private, nonprofit organization, established in 1979 to serve the needs of survivors of domestic violence and their children.

Did You Know

  • Nationally, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men are victims of domestic violence.
  • In Massachusetts, 1 in 5 teens report physical or sexual violence by a dating partner.
  • Children who witness domestic violence are more likely to abuse drugs, attempt suicide and run away from home
  • In Massachusetts, 24 men, women and children lost their live as a direct result of domestic violence in 2010.

How You Can Get Involved:

WALK OR RUN: You can register as an individual walker or runner. Ask your friends, family, co-workers and acquaintances to sponsor you by providing a donation to Independence House. All walkers/runners will be entered into prize drawings!

MAKE A TEAM: Organize your friends, family, co-workers and work-out buddies to register as a team! Create T-shirts and posters with your team logo, or come as you are and show your support as a group. Each individual on your team is entered into a prize-drawing!

DONATE: We understand not everyone is available to walk or run on October 1st, but you can easily show your support by sponsoring a walker/runner, or making a personal donation. We welcome the support of businesses and organizations, who can donate prizes and/or services from your business.
